Braces and clear aligners

Different appliances suit different tooth movements and bite problems. Your assessment helps determine which options are appropriate, including whether other dental treatment is needed first.

Braces

Fixed braces use brackets and wires to move teeth. They remain attached during treatment and are adjusted at review appointments.

Cleaning around the brackets and following advice on food and appliance care are part of treatment. The type of braces and any additional appliances depend on your clinical needs.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners use a series of removable trays to move teeth. They need to be worn according to the prescribed schedule and removed for eating and cleaning as instructed.

Suitability depends on the movements required, your bite and your ability to follow the wear schedule. Additional attachments or other appliances may be needed.

Neither option is suitable for every case. Discuss the expected benefits, limitations, risks and alternatives before deciding on treatment.

Children's and interceptive orthodontics

Children's orthodontic assessment looks at emerging teeth, available space and how the bite is developing. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic check-up by age 7. An assessment does not mean treatment must begin at that age.

When early treatment may be considered

Interceptive orthodontics is treatment for selected developing concerns while some baby teeth are still present. Depending on the findings, an expander or removable appliance may be considered. Other children may need periodic monitoring.

Early treatment is not needed for every child, and braces or other orthodontic treatment may still be needed later. If you have concerns about your child's bite or tooth eruption, ask about an assessment.

What to discuss at your consultation

Bring your questions about your teeth, bite and treatment preferences. The assessment informs the next steps.

Assessment

Your dental and medical history, oral health, tooth alignment and bite are reviewed. Photographs, scans or X-rays may be recommended when clinically indicated.

Treatment planning

Discuss suitable options, expected duration, limitations, risks and fees. Ask what the proposed fees include, such as records, review visits and retainers.

Reviews and retention

Follow-up appointments allow progress to be assessed. Retainers are generally needed after active treatment to help maintain tooth positions.

Common orthodontic questions

Can adults have orthodontic treatment?

Adults can be assessed for orthodontic treatment. Suitability depends on the health of the teeth, gums and supporting tissues, as well as the proposed tooth movements.

How long will braces or clear aligners take?

There is no single treatment duration for everyone. The complexity of the bite, planned movements, treatment response and adherence to instructions affect timing. An estimate can be discussed after assessment.

How much does orthodontic treatment cost?

Fees depend on the treatment plan and its scope. Request an individual quotation and ask about consultation and diagnostic records, appliances, reviews, retainers and any separately charged dental treatment.

Will my child need braces immediately?

Not necessarily. An assessment may lead to monitoring rather than treatment. Early intervention is considered only when appropriate for the child's developing teeth and bite.

Will I need teeth removed?

Extraction decisions depend on individual findings and treatment objectives. Discuss the reasons for any proposed extractions and whether alternatives are suitable; a non-extraction plan cannot be promised before assessment.

What are the risks and aftercare considerations?

Orthodontic treatment can involve discomfort and requires careful oral hygiene. Your clinician will explain risks relevant to your case and how to care for your appliances. Follow the prescribed retainer schedule after treatment, as teeth can change position over time.
